Roman posca was a popular drink among soldiers and the lower classes in ancient Rome. It was made by diluting sour wine or wine vinegar with water, often flavored with herbs or spices. While it may not sound appealing by modern standards, posca was valued for several reasons:
- Hydration: It was a safer alternative to plain water, which was often contaminated. The acidity of the vinegar helped kill bacteria.

- Taste Improvement: Sour wine that had gone bad could be repurposed into posca, reducing waste and making it more palatable.
