General Information
That Takes the Cake is a judged cake and sugar art competition that is open to all ages and skill levels. The competition is divided into the Divisional Competition, Sugar Showpiece Competition, Julia M. Usher’s Cookie Art Competition™, and Tasting Competition.
In the Divisional Competition, entries are classified by Division (age/skill level) and Style (type of entry) so that entries are only judged against others of the same style made by competitors with the same skill level.
The entries in the Sugar Showpiece Competition must be based on the annual theme – this year’s theme is Mythology. Additionally, Sugar Showpiece Competition entries must be over 2 feet tall and of sufficient size for 100 cake servings.
This year’s Tasting Competition includes the following categories: Baklava, Marshmallows, Common Ingredient – Sea Salt, Cookies and Donuts. All competitions are judged by a distinguished panel of qualified judges and competitors receive a judge’s comment sheet reviewing their entries.
A sugar art show is a multi-faceted event that brings sugar enthusiasts of all skill levels together from all over the country and all over the world. Competitors bring decorated cakes and sugar arts of all forms to enter into the judged competition.
Instructors offer a variety of classes to beginner to advanced students who are interested in learning new techniques. Vendors display and sell products that are unique to the sugar arts industry.
Events throughout the weekend are scheduled to be informative and interesting to attendees of all ages. Attendees include pastry chefs, sugar artists, business owners, hobby bakers and general public.
Come and see over 300 incredible works of sugar art entered into the competition, take a class or two, shop from vendors, decorate cupcakes and cookies, watch on-site competitions and so much more. There is truly something sweet for everyone at That Takes the Cake.

CHILD AND JUNIOR ENTRIES – The child / junior must decorate the entry themselves.
DIVISIONAL AWARDS / PRIZES
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Divisional Competition entries (from Teen to Masters) will be recognized with a medal in each Division for each Category. Award levels are at the judges’ discretion. If there are fewer than 3 entries per category or the judges decide the entries are insufficient to be awarded high awards, they may decide to only award 2nd and/or 3rd place or no awards at all.
Of the 1st place entries in each Category per Division, one Best of Division entry will be chosen and awarded a trophy, $250.00 cash, and prizes.
The overall Best of the Divisional Competition will be chosen from the Best of Division winners and awarded an additional trophy, $750.00 cash, and prizes.
SUGAR SHOWPIECE AWARDS / PRIZES
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Sugar Showpiece Competition entries in each Sugar Showpiece Division will be recognized, with 2nd and 3rd place receiving medals and prizes.
1st place will be awarded a medal, trophy, $250.00 cash, and prizes. Award levels are at the judges’ discretion. If there are fewer than 3 entries per category or the judges decide the entries are insufficient to be awarded high awards, they may decide to only award 2nd and/or 3rd place or no awards at all.
Of the 1st place entries in the Sugar Showpiece Divisions, one will be chosen as Best Individual Sugar Showpiece and win a trophy, $1000.00 cash, and prizes.

1st: $1000.00
2nd: $650.00
3rd: $350.00
TASTING AWARDS / PRIZES
1st, 2nd, and 3rd place Tasting Competition entries will be recognized with medals and King Arthur Flour Gift Cards in the following amounts:
$75.00 for each 3rd place
$150.00 for each 2nd place
$250.00 for each 1st place
Award levels are at the judges’ discretion. If there are fewer than 3 entries per category or the judges decide the entries are insufficient to be awarded high awards, they may decide to only award 2nd and/or 3rd place or no awards at all.
Of the 1st place entries in each Category, one will be chosen as the Best of Tasting Competition and win an additional King Arthur Flour Gift Card valued at $250.00.
OTHER AWARDS / PRIZES
All Child and Junior entries will be recognized with a medal.
Special awards will win prize packs and the following cash amounts: Innovation Award $250.00.
